Three Historic Buildings, Twenty-Two Rooms

The Pinch opened in 2022 at the corner of King and George Streets in Ansonborough, assembled from three structures: the Lequeux-Williams House, a private residence dating to 1843, and the Bob Ellis buildings from 1869, both on the National Register of Historic Places, alongside one newly built addition. Philadelphia's Method Co. developed the property with Morris Adjmi Architects, and the restoration leans on clay, stone, and original wood rather than a reproduction finish, giving the twenty-two rooms and suites a weight the plywood-and-shiplap boutique formula elsewhere in the city doesn't quite reach, and a penthouse residence on the third floor keeps a working fireplace from the original house.

Why It Works

We chose this hotel because it is scaled to be considered rather than merely occupied: twenty-two rooms mean every one of them got real attention, and three distinct food and drink venues on one small footprint show a level of commitment most boutique hotels this size can't justify financially. Lowland handles the serious dinner reservation, Lowland Tavern opens onto George Street for something more casual, and The Quinte pours oysters and cocktails at a pace built for lingering. Three furnished residences round it out for guests planning to stay a month rather than a weekend, a rare offering at this scale in the neighborhood.

Why This Location

Ansonborough sits just north of the main King Street shopping stretch, close enough to walk into the thick of the Historic District in minutes but quiet enough that George Street itself feels residential after dark. The City Market and Waterfront Park are both within an easy walk, and the neighborhood's mix of private homes and small businesses gives the hotel a genuine street to sit on rather than a tourist strip. It rewards a guest who wants to feel like they are staying in Charleston rather than at a hotel built for Charleston, with the Gaillard Center's performances also reachable on the same short walk.

Three Restaurants, One Small Hotel

Most twenty-two-room hotels commit to one restaurant if they commit to any; The Pinch runs three, each with a distinct register. Lowland is the reservation worth planning a night around, Lowland Tavern is the drop-in on George Street for something lighter, and The Quinte handles oysters and cocktails in a smaller, quieter room built for two people and a bottle rather than a group. The range means a guest can eat every meal on property without repeating the same room twice, and without the hotel feeling like it is trying to be three different brands at once.

A Corner Built From Three Different Centuries

The 1843 Lequeux-Williams House, the 1869 Bob Ellis buildings, and a newly constructed addition sit on the same King and George Street corner without pretending to be a single seamless structure, and Morris Adjmi Architects' restoration leaves the seams between them visible rather than smoothed over. Original wood, exposed stone, and clay-toned plaster carry through the interiors, and the cobblestone courtyard at the center gives the whole assembly a shared outdoor room where the three buildings actually meet, functioning as the hotel's real lobby more than the check-in desk does.
