The Pinch Charleston
We chose this address because it packs three centuries and three restaurants into twenty-two rooms...
Market Pavilion sits on East Bay Street, a short walk from the City Market and the waterfront, in a building that plays historic Charleston character against contemporary luxury rather than picking one or the other. The design vocabulary is deliberately grand — chandeliers, dark wood, decadent furnishings — but the hotel's real identity lives on the roof, where a cascading pool and an open bar look out over the historic district's rooflines to the harbor beyond. It's a hotel built to be seen from the street as much as lived in from a room, and the two identities rarely compete with each other.
We chose Market Pavilion because the rooftop Pavilion Bar has become a genuine Charleston destination independent of the hotel around it, the kind of place locals go for a sunset cocktail regardless of where they're sleeping that night. Pairing that energy with Grill 225, a steakhouse serious enough to run under its own executive chef rather than as a hotel amenity, gives the property a rare double identity: a legitimate night out and a luxury stay in the same address. Few hotels in the historic district manage both at this level.
East Bay Street runs along the edge of the historic district, close enough to the City Market to walk over for an afternoon browsing antiques and close enough to the waterfront to catch the harbor breeze in the evening. It's a central, high-energy stretch rather than a quiet residential pocket, which suits guests who want to be in the middle of things rather than a short cab ride from them, and it puts Charleston's carriage tours and horse-drawn routes within a block or two.

Grill 225 is built to stand on its own as a Charleston steakhouse, with an executive chef running the kitchen and a menu focused on premium cuts rather than a broad, crowd-pleasing hotel menu. It draws its own reservations from outside the hotel, which is the clearest signal that the food here isn't an afterthought to the rooftop's reputation, and it gives guests a serious dinner option without a walk anywhere else in the city.
The Pavilion Bar changes character through the day: quiet enough for a late-afternoon swim before the crowd arrives, then increasingly social as sunset approaches and the bar fills with both guests and outside visitors. Arriving early for a poolside seat before the after-work crowd is the more relaxed way to see it; arriving after dark trades quiet for the energy the venue is actually known for across Charleston.
The rooftop's popularity with non-guests means the Pavilion Bar can get loud and crowded on weekend evenings, which suits travelers looking for energy but is worth knowing before booking a quiet anniversary weekend. The hotel doesn't list itself as family- or pet-friendly, and it reads as a property built for couples, groups and a lively night out rather than a family base for exploring the historic district by day.

We loved this hotel for treating its two 18th-century warehouse buildings as gallery space first...
